St Benet’s, Netherton welcome CAFOD Partner, Sister Yvonne Mwila from Zambia

CAFOD Liverpool were delighted to be visited by Sr Yvonne from Zambia where she was kindly hosted by parishioners from St Benet’s.

Sr Yvonne is a Religious Sister in the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. She has been in Mbala, Zambia for 9 years and working in the Households In Distress Programme (HID) for 8 years. HID programme’s goal is to contribute to the reduction of the impact of HIV and AIDS on the infected and most affected families in communities through quality care and support, and livelihoods initiatives.

Sr Yvonne delivered a short talk at mass in St Raymond’s Chapel, and then at St Benet’s where she was welcomed by the children of the parish, and also given some challenging questions by them!

The mass was followed by a coffee morning allowing parishioners to meet Sister Yvonne and have a chat over tea and delicious cake. The cakes were donated and home made by parishioners, and through the sales of these as well as a toy sale and raffle, over £500 was raised on the day!

CAFOD Community Participation Coordinator, Colette Byrne, said, ‘I’m absolutely delighted with the amount of effort the whole parish has gone to, to welcome Sister Yvonne and support CAFOD’s work to help people in Zambia. So many parishioners stayed after mass and supported the day, it was really uplifting to see and the cakes were scrumptious too!’

CAFOD would like to thank Fr Bruce from St Benet’s, Netherton for supporting the event and to our CAFOD volunteers in that parish, Richard and his wife Maggie, and Mat, his wife Sue and daughter Emily who were all phenomenal over the weekend. CAFOD simply could not continue to provide its inspirational work without this kind of support. On hearing that she was a football fan, in true scouse style, a Liverpool shirt was presented to Sr Yvonne which she was delighted with!
